Resident Evil 7-Biohazard marks the series' return to its survival horror roots. The game is less action-oriented and more focused on exploration. The game's main protagonist is Ethan Winters, an American civilian in search of his wife. Unlike previous entries in the series, the protagonist has virtually no combat experience. However, he is still capable of arming himself with various weapons such as handguns, shotguns, explosives and chainsaws.

The Resident Evil 7-Biohazard key unlocks the first game in the main series to use the first-person viewpoint, and the first complete game to also use the RE engine. There's also another huge difference from previous entries in the series. Ethan's enemies can only be temporarily incapacitated, and encounters with them can be avoided by cowering or stealth.
